History / Histoire

Founded in 1980, the Canadian Science and Technology Historical Association (CSTHA) is a national society devoted to the study of the history of Canadian science and technology. Our primary mission is to make our scientific and technical history better known and to make this subject an important element in Canadian historiography. We have been a member of the Canadian  Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences since 2003. The Association’s archives are held by York University Archives.

Fondée en 1980, l’Association pour l’histoire de la science et de la technologie au Canada (AHSTC) est une association nationale vouée à l’étude de l’histoire de la science et de la technologie au Canada. Elle vise à mieux faire connaître l’histoire des sciences et de la technologie canadienne et à faire de ce sujet un élément important de l’historiographie. Nous sommes membres de la Fédération canadienne des sciences humaines depuis 2003. Les archives de l’Association sont conservées à l’université York.

Objectives / Objectifs

To reach these objectives, the CSTHA has several mandates:

  • to form a research community
  • to sustain both teaching and research
  • to encourages respect for our heritage
  • to diffuse new knowledge through conferences
  • to publish the journal Scientia Canadensis
  • to inform member through Dialogue

Afin d’atteindre ses objectifs, l’AHSTC s’est dotée de plusieurs mandats :

  • constituer une communauté de chercheurs
  • soutenir l’enseignement et la recherche
  • encourager la mise en valeur du patrimoine
  • diffuser de nouvelles connaissances lors de congrès

Constitution / Constitution

According to the Constitution (PDF), CSTHA’s administration is composed of seven officers: a President, a Secretary, a Treasurer, the Editor of Scientia Canadensis, two directors, and a Student Representative. The Past President is an ex-officio member.

Executive council / Conseil de direction

PRESIDENT / PRÉSIDENT

Presides over meetings of the Association and of the Executive Committee; charged with the direction of the affairs of the Association. Principal dirigeant de l’Association et du Conseil de direction; prise toutes les assemblées.

TREASURER/ TRÉSORIER

Responsible for the financial affairs of the Association; maintain the official office of the Association. Responsable des états financiers de l’Association; maintient le bureau de l’Association.

Sean Nicklin

SECRETARY / SECRÉTAIRE

Keep minutes of meetings of the Association and the Executive and take charge of the official correspondence, including memberships. Rédige les procès-verbaux des assemblées de l’Association et du Conseil d’administration; prend en charge la correspondance officielle, y compris les affiliations.

Mahdi Khelfaoui
  • Mahdi is a second year PhD student in Science, Technology and Society at Université du Québec à Montréal, under the supervision of Pr. Yves Gingras. He is a student member of the Centre Interuniversitaire de Recherche sur la Science et la Technologie and the French book editor for the Scientia Canadensis.

David Orenstein
  • David studied Mathematics and Biology at the University of Toronto and pursued a career as a high school math teacher for the Toronto Board of Education. His interest in history of science started in his student days developing into a research pursuit, a calling that has become a major part of his retirement activities.
Anna Adamek

STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE / REPRÉSENTANT ÉTUDIANT

Assists and advises the other officers and acts as the contact with student members. Assiste et conseille les autres membres du conseil de direction, et joue un rôle de l’étudiant en contact avec les membres.

Mark Sholdice
  • Mark is a PhD candidate at the University of Guelph with an interest in agricultural history and the history of electrification. Mark is a recipient of several graduate awards and a former Visiting Student Research Collaborator at the Department of History, Princeton University.

 

SCIENTIA CANADENSIS  EDITOR-IN-CHIEF/REDACTEUR-EN-CHEF

Produces a scholarly journal of the history of science, technology, and medicine. Fait paraître une revue d’histoire des sciences, de la technologie et de la médecine répondant à des critères scientifique.

David Pantalony
  • David Pantalony is the Curator of Physical Sciences and Medicine at the Canada Science and Technology Museum in Ottawa. He specializes in the history of scientific instruments, with an active research interest in Post-World War II science in Canada. He is an Adjunct Professor at the Department of History, University of Ottawa, where he teaches a collections-based seminar. He holds a PhD in the history of science from the University of Toronto (2002). In 2012 he won the Paul Bunge Book Prize for his book on Rudolph Koenig’s acoustical workshop in 19th century Paris. He is the Editor-in-Chief of Scientia Canadensis: Canadian Journal of the
    History of Science, Technology and Medicine.

William Knight
  • William Knight is curator of agriculture, food, fisheries, and forestry at the Canada Science and Technology Museums Corporation in Ottawa. He completed his dissertation on the Canadian Fisheries Museum at Carleton University.
