The Canadian Science and Technology Historical Association executives invite you to mark your calendar for the 2024 CSTHA Annual General Meeting to be held on:
Thursday March 7th, 2024 from 1:00-3:00 pm EST
The executive will report on activities over the past year. Members will also be asked to approve the budget for 2024-2026 and to vote on nominations for the following vacant executive positions:
- President
- Treasurer
- Secretary
- Communications Director
- Director
- Student Representative
Nominations, including self-nominations, are now open. Nominations are due no later than Wednesday, February 7th, 2024 and can be emailed to cstha.ahstc@gmail.com. The nominations will then be disseminated to members for their consideration.

Here’s an update on Canadian Science and Technology Historical Association activities over the past year:
Biennial Conference in Halifax, November 3-5, 2023
This was our first in-person conference since 2019, and it went off very well in its hybrid format with in-person and virtual attendance. The conference launched on Friday night at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic (MMA) with a reception and a well-attended keynote talk by Eric Mills on the Challenger expedition. Eric’s talk was followed by a day-and-a-half of plenary sessions at the Nova Scotia Natural History Museum (NHM). We enjoyed the camaraderie of attending a small conference and its social and intellectual rewards, and had positive feedback from attendees.
In total, we had 24 in-person attendees and 10 virtual ones, with a total of 19 presentations, including an archivists’ panel. Subjects ranged across space, military technology, telecommunications, wax modeling, geology, marine fisheries science, lighthouse automation, teaching engineering students historical thinking, and an artist’s talk on a museum artifact in the MMA. Kate Bauer was awarded the best student-presentation prize and all students who were present were given travel subsidies that covered most of their costs.
Thanks to Courtney Mrazek, and her husband, Brandon Callahan, who were instrumental to the conference’s success. A big thank you also to Tim Fedak at the NHM and Jenny Nodelman at the MMA for their support and assistance with on-the-ground arrangements—we could not have done it without their generous help and time commitments.

Scientia Canadensis News
We are pleased to announce that Dr Mahdi Khelfaoui, a recent hire at the Université du Québec a Trois-Rivières, has joined Scientia as our new editor. Mahdi has been a long-time CSTHA member, serving on the executive, and assisting with the journal. Together, we will share editing responsibilities as I, Will, continue in the position of managing editor.
Another big change is that we are partnering with the University of Alberta Library Publishing (UALP) programto use the open-source peer-review system available from the Public Knowledge Project. The Open Journal System (OJS) will help us improve the management of the peer-review process and automate some tasks. In late July, Mahdi, guest editor Matthew Wiseman, and myself completed training on OJS, with Matthew beginning to pilot OJS with the special issue on military technology.
We signed a Memorandum of Understanding with UALP who hosts and supports OJS at no charge to CSTHA. This agreement does not affect our relationship with Erudit, who will continue to publish Scientia. Issues, starting with the next one, will also appear on the Scientia page hosted by UALP. This arrangement strengthens our commitment to open-access publishing and broadens our reach. We thank the University of Alberta Library team, particularly Katie Cuyler and Emily Zheng who are helping us to transition to OJS.
Production-wise we published a special issue on photography, guest edited by Joan Schwartz, early in the new year. “Photography: Science, Technology and Practice” is a big issue, with eight articles and nine book reviews. Two other special issues, one on military technology and the other presenting new scholarship on the history of science and technology in Quebec, are now in the works, both of which are using the new OJS capabilities. The issue on military technology should be out in the new year.

Finally, a special shout-out to Martha Jarrell, who continues to provide moral and material support to our organization – especially when it comes to graduate students. We also recognize the continued work from Courtney Mrazek, a newly-minted PhD, who has worked part-time for the CSTHA over the past few years.

Colloque biennal à Halifax, du 3 au 5 novembre 2023
Il s’agissait de notre première conférence en personne depuis 2019, et elle s’est très bien déroulée dans son format hybride avec une participation en personne et virtuelle. La conférence a débuté le vendredi soir au Musée maritime de l’Atlantique (MMA) avec une réception et un discours d’Eric Mills sur l’expédition Challenger, qui a attiré de nombreux participants. L’exposé d’Eric a été suivi d’une journée et demie de séances plénières au Musée d’histoire naturelle de la Nouvelle-Écosse (NHM). Nous avons apprécié la camaraderie d’une petite conférence et ses avantages sociaux et intellectuels, et nous avons reçu des commentaires positifs de la part des participants.
Au total, nous avons eu 24 participants en personne et 10 participants virtuels, avec un total de 19 présentations, y compris un panel d’archivistes. Les sujets abordés concernaient l’espace, la technologie militaire, les télécommunications, la modélisation en cire, la géologie, les sciences de la pêche en mer, l’automatisation des phares, l’enseignement de la pensée historique aux étudiants en ingénierie, ainsi qu’un exposé d’artiste sur un artefact de musée dans le MMA. Kate Bauer a reçu le prix de la meilleure présentation étudiante et tous les étudiants présents ont bénéficié de subventions de voyage qui ont couvert la plupart de leurs frais.
Merci à Courtney Mrazek, et à son mari Brandon Callahan, qui ont contribué au succès de la conférence. Merci également à Tim Fedak du NHM et à Jenny Nodelman du MMA pour leur soutien et leur aide dans les préparatifs sur le terrain – nous n’aurions pas pu le faire sans leur aide.
Nouveau prix de la meilleure thèse en 2024

Le nom du lauréat ou de la lauréate sera annoncé à Halifax, en novembre. Si vous connaissez un étudiant ou une étudiante qui serait admissible à ce prix, n’hésitez pas à nous en faire part!
Des nouvelles de Scientia Canadensis
Nous avons le plaisir d’annoncer que Mahdi Khelfaoui, Ph.D., récemment embauché à l’Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières, se joint à l’équipe de Scientia en tant que nouveau rédacteur en chef. M. Khelfaoui est un membre de longue date de l’AHSTC, ayant siégé au comité exécutif et ayant soutenu la préparation de notre publication. Nous nous partagerons les responsabilités de rédaction bien que je continuerai d’occuper le poste de rédacteur en chef.
Autre changement important à signaler, nous nous associons au programme de publication de la Bibliothèque de l’Université de l’Alberta (UAL) afin de pouvoir utiliser le système de révision par les pairs à source ouverte de son projet de connaissances publiques. L’Open Journal System (OJS) nous aidera à mieux gérer la démarche d’évaluation par les pairs et à automatiser certaines tâches. À la fin juillet, Mahdi Khelfaoui, le rédacteur invité Matthew Wiseman et moi-même avons suivi une formation sur l’OJS, et Matthew a commencé la mise à l’essai du système avec le numéro spécial sur la technologie militaire.
Nous avons signé un protocole d’entente avec le programme de la UAL qui héberge et soutient gratuitement l’OJS pour l’AHSTC. Cette entente n’affectera pas notre relation avec la plateforme Érudit, qui continuera de publier Scientia. Mais à partir du prochain numéro, notre revue paraîtra également sur la page Scientiahébergée par la UAL. Cette entente renforce notre engagement envers la publication à accès ouvert et élargit la portée de notre revue. Nous remercions l’équipe de la UAL, en particulier Katie Cuyler et Emily Zheng, qui nous aident à faire la transition vers l’OJS.
Sur le plan de la production, nous avons publié un numéro spécial sur la photographie sous la direction de Joan Schwartz, en début d’année. Photography: Science, Technology and Practice a été un gros numéro, comptant huit articles et neuf critiques de livre. Deux autres numéros spéciaux, un sur la technologie militaire et l’autre sur de nouvelles recherches sur l’histoire de la science et de la technologie au Québec, sont en cours de préparation. Le numéro sur la technologie militaire devrait être publié d’ici la fin de l’année.
Nous vous remercions pour votre soutien continu, et saluons particulièrement Martha Jarrell qui continue d’apporter un soutien moral et matériel à notre organisme, en particulier pour les étudiants. Un grand merci, aussi, à Courtney Mrazek, nouvellement titulaire d’un doctorat, qui a travaillé à temps partiel pour l’AHSTC au cours des dernières années.
