INNOVATION OR ABERRATION? SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY AND HISTORICAL MEANINGS OF FAILURE

The 2017 CSTHA biennial conference will be held November 3–5 at King’s University College in London, Ontario. The Program Committee invites papers addressing this year’s conference theme: “Innovation or Aberration? Science, Technology and Historical Meanings of Failure.”

  • Registration
    • The regular registration fee is $185 (full-time/employed) and $100 for students/seniors/underemployed until October 15, 2017. Any registration after this date will cost an additional $25. This fee covers access to the keynote presentation, panels, refreshments, and a lunch on Saturday. It also includes a banquet on Saturday night, to be held at the River Room at Museum London (http://northmoore.ca/theriverroom/). Dinner will begin at 7pm, and guests will have a choice of three entrees. Please advise us as soon as possible whether you have any allergies or dietary restrictions (cstha.ahstc.conf@gmail.com). Additional tickets for spouses or significant others can be purchased for $60.

  • All participants of the CSTHA conference must be members in good standing. The regular membership rate is $80.00 and the student membership rate is $40. Each is for a two-year period. Join or renew.
  • Location
  • Travel bursaries
    • The CSTHA offers generous travel bursaries to students who present at our conferences. Please retain all travel-related receipts, to be submitted to the CSTHA executive after the conference for approval (please email cstha.ahstc.conf@gmail.com). All reimbursements will be dependent on the number of requests received.
  • Tours (optional, no charge)
    • UWO Medical Artifact Collection at Western University
      5:00 to 6:00pm

      Participants are asked to meet outside of the Collection’s main artifact display in Lawson Hall, Room 2260.

      Here is a map of Western’s campus: http://www.geography.uwo.ca/campusmaps/images/map/westernandaffiliates.pdf Lawson Hall is located off Oxford, between Somerville House and Stevenson Hall.  Once you arrive at Lawson, walk up the steps, and continue going straight after you’ve entered the doors. The Artifact Collection display will be directly in front of you.

    • “Exploring the Stars” at the Cronyn Observatory (Western University)
      9:15pm to 11:00pm

      Participants are asked to gather after the keynote address, in order to head to Main campus to visit the observatory.

INNOVATION OU ABERRATION? LES SIGNIFACTIONS HISTORIQUES DE L’ÉCHEC SCIENTIFIQUE ET TECHNOLOGIQUE

La conférence biennale de la CSTHA pour l’année 2017 se tiendra du 3 au 5 novembre, au King’s University College à London en Ontario. Le comité scientifique lance un appel à la communication de travaux de recherche portant sur le thème de la conférence: « Innovation ou aberration? Les significations historiques de l’échec scientifique et technologique ».

  • Inscription
    • Les frais d’inscription réguliers sont de 185$ (plein temps/employé) et de 100$ pour les étudiants/seniors/temps-partiels jusqu’au 15 octobre 2017. Toute inscription après cette date coûtera 25$ additionnels. Ces frais couvrent l’accès à la conférence d’ouverture, aux sessions, à des rafraichissements, et un lunch le samedi. Ils incluent également un l’accès à un banquet le samedi soir, qui se tiendra à la River Room du musée de London (http://northmoore.ca/theriverroom/). Le souper débutera à 19h. Nous vous prions de nous aviser au plutôt, si vous souffrez d’allergies ou de restrictions alimentaires (cstha.ahstc.conf@gmail.com). Des billets additionnels pour les conjoints peuvent être achetés pour le prix de 60$.

  • Bourses de voyage
    • L’AHSTC offre des bourses de voyages pour les étudiants qui présentent à ses conférences. Veuillez conserver tous les reçus liés à votre voyage, que vous soumettrez à l’exécutif de l’AHSTC après la conférence (cstha.ahstc.conf@gmail.com). Les montants des remboursements dépendront du nombre de demandes reçues.

      5:00-6pm
      Cette visite impliquera un accès aux pièces liées à la collection d’histoire de la médecine au Canada. La visite débutera à 17h, le vendredi 3 novembre, et durera 45 minutes sous la direction du Dr. Michelle Hamilton de la Western University. *Les participants sont invités à se présenter à l’extérieur de l’édifice principal de la Collection* *à Lawson Hall, Salle 2260* (située à Oxford, entre Middlesex et Lambton:http://www.geography.uwo.ca/campusmaps/images/map/westernandaffiliates.pdf).
